High Desert slugger smacks two home runs in 7-3 win over Lancaster

(LANCASTER, CA) – Rich Poythress took advantage of favorable conditions and belted a pair of two-run home runs to give High Desert a 7-3 victory over the JetHawks at Clear Channel Stadium Sunday. Poythress hit both homers over the right field wall, where the wind was blowing out throughout the contest. The Mavericks claimed a series victory and Lancaster will try to avoid being swept in the finale of the four-game set Monday at 7 p.m.

The Mavericks seized a 2-0 lead when Poythress hit the first of his two round-trippers of JetHawks starter Brad Dydalewicz with two outs in the top of the first.

Lancaster sliced the lead in half in the bottom of the first when Albert Cartwright socked a solo home run over the left field fence.

But the Mavericks struck for three runs on three hits in the fourth. High Desert got an RBI double from Johermyn Chavez, an RBI single from Juan Diaz and a sacrifice fly from Travis Scott in the frame. As a result, the Mavericks extended their lead to 5-1.

Poythress connected for his second home run off Dydalewicz in the top of the fifth, which ended the night for the JetHawks starter.

Lancaster’s Brandon Wikoff delivered an RBI single that scored Federico Hernandez in the bottom of the frame and made it a 7-2 ballgame. The JetHawks added another run in the eighth on an RBI double from Brandon Barnes. But the JetHawks were unable to mount a ninth inning comeback as High Desert won its third straight contest at the Hangar.

Andrew Carraway (3-2) earned the win for High Desert after scattering nine hits and allowing two runs in seven innings of work. Dydalewicz (1-4) was charged with the loss for Lancaster. With the win, High Desert improved to 26-18. Lancaster fell to 15-28.

The JetHawks will attempt to avoid the series sweep when the two teams meet in the finale of the four-game set at Clear Channel Stadium Monday. Lefty Shane Wolf (3-2, 4.15 ERA) gets the start for Lancaster. The Mavericks are expected to counter with lefty Ryan Feierabend (0-1, 5.31 ERA).
