Timely hitting and Wolf’s quality outing lifts Lancaster to 8-1 triumph
(LANCASTER, CA) – Shane Wolf turned in his best start of the season and the JetHawks offense enjoyed a productive evening at the plate as Lancaster routed High Desert 8-1 in the opener of a three-game series at Mavericks Stadium Tuesday. Wolf limited the Mavericks to seven hits and one earned run in seven innings of work and picked up his second win of the season.
The JetHawks wasted no time in grabbing the early lead. Jay Austin led off the ballgame with a solo home run off High Desert starter Bobby LaFromboise. Albert Cartwright followed with a double and Mark Ori knocked in Cartwright with an RBI single, which put Lancaster in front 2-0 in the first.
High Desert cut the lead in half by scoring a run off Wolf in the bottom of the third. Mario Mendez singled to start the frame and advanced to third when Kyle Seager ripped a single through the right side of the infield. Edilio Colina drove in Mendez with a sacrifice fly, which made it a 2-1 contest.
The JetHawks broke the game open by scoring five runs on six hits in the top of the fourth. Ori and David Flores hit consecutive singles to start the inning. Brandon Barnes followed with a sacrifice bunt that resulted in a run when Colina committed a throwing error on the play. With Flores and Barnes at the corners, LaFromboise struck out Federico Hernandez. But Ebert Rosario drove in Flores with an RBI single, which started a string of four consecutive RBI singles by Lancaster hitters. Brandon Wikoff, Austin and Cartwright each delivered RBI base hits in the frame to extend Lancaster’s lead to 7-1.
Six runs was all the support Wolf needed. The left-hander allowed just two hits and no runs in his final four innings of work. Ashton Mowdy and Brian Wabick combined to toss two innings of scoreless relief after Wolf departed following the seventh inning.
Wolf (2-2) evened his record with the win. LaFromboise (3-1), who tossed seven scoreless innings in a win over Lancaster at the Hangar last week, suffered his first loss of the season.
Lancaster received multi-hit games from four players, including Austin and Cartwright, who combined to go 5-for-10 with four RBIs and three runs scored at the top of the batting order.
With the victory, Lancaster improved to 8-16. The loss dropped High Desert to 14-11.
